Don't Make Any Decision on Your External Wall Insulation Until You've Read This
If you want your external wall insulation to act like Fort Knox keeping in your valuable heat and defending you against the TRIPLE INVADERS of cold, damp and draughts then you need Fusion Seamless Foam Insulation.
Discover, the shocking truth of how many insulations ‘brag’ about U values but neglect to tell you that they cannot cope with dampness, draughts and the forces of ageing.
The external walls of your home are your first line of defence against the cold, dampness and draughts, yet so many insulation systems under-perform when it comes to these fundamentals. Your home, your office your buildings are your pride and joy and your ‘castle’ . Your external walls make you feel secure, and safe, but an incorrectly or badly insulated wall invites in dampness and draughts and cold. These nastiest can invade your home with ease and most of us don’t even realise it.
If your home, office or building was built in the last 50 years chances are it has a cavity wall construction of some sort or other. Cavity wall have an “Achilles heel” in that until recently pretty much every wall cavity was open to the outside world or to use an industry term was ‘ventilated’. In practice this meant that outside air, cold and damp air could reach into your cavity to the inside leaf of block-work in your home and ‘suck’ the heat out of your home.
If you want to get the low down on wall insulation jump to our cavity wall page now.
As more and more people realised the weaknesses of external wall insulation and the fact that ventilated attic spaces and external wall spaces weren’t the best way to keep your home airtight and performing to the highest insulation standards, a new building ‘norm’ developed. The emergence of vapour barriers in modern construction meant that designers and builders were now trying to stop the ingress of cold damp air into the envelope of your home, office or building. In our opinion this is a major step forward in the quest to make homes, offices and building super-insulated and ultra energy efficient.
But here’s the thing, modern vapour barriers are half the story, you still need a high performance insulation system to support your vapour barrier in your external walls and attic. However modern construction systems in many cases are still using traditional and outdated insulation systems. Many of the Roll and Sheet external insulation systems look great on paper but when it comes to the real world conditions on your home they fall down and fall down badly.
Take for example roll type fibre insulation. In order to do its job Roll type insulations have to remain absolutely dry and remain absolutely uncompressed for them to retain their U values and insulating properties.
What happens most roll type insulations when they are put in your external and partition walls? Over time they get damp, they get soggy and they sag and compress.
After a short time roll insulations can loose its insulating performance dramatically. Your roll insulation can in fact turn from insulator to conductor once it gets damp from condensation and then to your horror it becomes a rather good conductor of heat, which is exactly what you don’t want it do .
I know you’re thinking that that’s crazy, but the hard cold truth is that these woolly roll type insulations were designed to be installed in environments that are absolutely bone dry and with no air movement across them . This is why for example most fibreglass roll type insulations are used in furnace and boiler housings i.e. dry and airtight.
But this isn’t what external wall will be like. Your external walls insulation needs to be impervious to water and vapour tight. What about board type insulations you’re thinking? They wont compress and wont get saggy. True! But they come in sheets don’t they? They have to be precisely cut, taped and jointed, and plastered over. On a building site many board insulations simply aren’t practical to precisely cut and fashion and as a result often are under-performing at the joints
Here’s another shocking scientific fact:
Joints in any insulation whether they are board insulation or roll insulation leak heat and destroy U values.
